For the determination of magnesium content in seawater aquariums by complexometric titration. Visual method after color change.

The test is designed to determine the magnesium content in saltwater aquariums from 1100 to 1500 mg/l Mg.

The magnesium content is determined in two successive steps by complexometric titration.
Since it is not possible to determine the magnesium content alone, the total content of alkaline earth ions (magnesium and calcium) must first be determined. In the second step, the calcium content is determined. By subtracting the calcium content from the total content of alkaline earth ions, the magnesium content of the water is maintained.
Alkaline ions from the earth form a red-coloured complex with the indicator used. Titration with Na2-EDTA (Titriplex III) releases the indicator while the alkaline earth ions are complexed by EDTA. The free indicator colours the solution blue-green. The titration is finished when the colour changes from red to blue-green.
